When I arrived at Ibiza Airport in June 2001 and found my first Café del Mar release “Get Back to Serenity” in a local CD shop, a dream had come true. Of course, at that time I had no inkling of what would become of it, and that 20 years later Vargo would still fulfill my lifelong dream: to be able to earn a living by making music. I clearly felt that the „White Island” would play a very important role in my future life and sensed a close, fond and even spiritual connection with the island and its people. Many Vargo titles have been created there over time. One Café del Mar release turned into 15, one compilation turned into more than 200. Three artist albums were recorded, and these produced the three chillout world hits “Get Back to Serenity“, “The Moment” and “One Language”. Countless EPs and eight original Vargo compilations followed, not to mention appearences in films, advertising, as well as at major events; the Soccer World Cup, for instance. And before all that, the very first Vargo track “Electric Diver”, an Instrumental, appeared on the cult label Spirit Zone’s compilation Global Psychedelic Chillout in 2000, yet without the voice of Stephanie Hundertmark.
After singer Steffi‘s leaving the band in 2014, I focused on my passion for DJing, which would also have a strong musical impact on the upcoming productions. Fascinated by the current development in Melodic Techno and Progressive House, I initiated a new radio show called LOST IN MUSIC on Planet Radio. The following “100 EP” became the bridge from Downbeat to Melodic Techno. With the “Mindshift EP”, which was released in Cooperation with Chris Zippel on our jointly run label KAYOON in 2019, Vargo has now embraced uplifting Melodic Techno and Progressive House. I am delighted and grateful that this new direction is equally appreciated and that the tracks are played by artists I admire such as Artbat, Adriatique, Blond:ish, Dirty Doering, Dr. Motte and many other exceptional DJs.
In addition to regular appearances such as at the Deichbrand or Antaris Festival, the Katermukke Showcase or Tanz dich Hai, I have now come full circle with the Sundowner events by the sea. Joined by wonderful guest musicians such as guitarist Roland Cabezas or percussion wizard Mäddi Tation and sometimes even singer Stephanie Hundertmark, we embark on a journey through time that truly connects genres and people. Starting with early classic loungey Vargo-Sounds to chill out by on the beach, we smoothly move on to end up in the sweet here and now dancing to contemporary electronic beats.
With happiness and a deep gratitude I look back on these many precious moments and encounters, on all the wonderful people I had the opportunity to work with, on all supporters and fans that encouraged me. Full of joy and curious anticipation, I am now looking forward to everything that is yet to come. I thank life for me being in good health and able to do all the wonderful things that fascinate me and to do them with wonderful, inspiring friends.
I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for all the years that we have shared. Welcome everyone who is up to join the ride.
The journey continues …
